To improve the living conditions of rural and urban communities
Diaspora Women in Action (DWiA) is a network representing the diverse voices of women from diaspora communities in Germany — their experiences, their contributions, and their demands for recognition.
The network emerged from a 2023 study commissioned by PMD (Programme Migration & Diaspora) on the engagement of diaspora women and their connections to their countries of origin. At a gathering in Berlin, participants — including representatives from BMZ — identified a clear and shared need: a platform that could bring these voices together and give them lasting form. In response, a working group was formed, made up of women nominated by their peers to define the network's direction.
Three priorities shaped the early work: mapping the current landscape of diaspora organisations in Germany, bringing women together to discuss the findings, and developing a long-term platform for exchange.

GIZ — Diaspora for Gender Equality
This project used participatory design workshops to identify and develop strategies, methods, and tools in collaboration with women from the community and their leaders. The knowledge and ideas generated fed into the design, management, and leadership of cultural and community projects, while supporting the development of individual skills and interests. The project also created space for women to reflect on and discuss their territory as a historical and cultural space, from a gender-sensitive perspective.
One outcome was the creation of a rural market, where the women built their own stalls using traditional techniques and sold products they had developed themselves.
